Celebrating the Best

Dock Street Group has worked with the Designers Institute of New Zealand on the Best Design Awards since 2002. During this time, the awards has become the most prestigious design awards programme in Australia and New Zealand and attendance at the annual awards dinner has increased dramatically from around 200 guests to more than 1100 in 2017.

The overarching long term goal of the Best Design Awards is to increase the profile of design and to stress its importance to New Zealand companies’ ability to succeed on the global stage. The awards also ensure that designers are valued for their contribution to the economic, cultural and social growth of New Zealand.

Each year Dock Street Group works with the Designers Institute on a communications campaign to secure a wide range of coverage in print, broadcast and digital media. This strategy focuses on key phases of the awards: call for entries; the judging process, where we interview local and international judges for their insight; the finalists’ announcement and the winners. Through each phase, we reached out to high profile regional and national media outlets, focusing on securing coverage for the finalists and interesting entries while planning and organising coverage of the key winners.

The 2017 Best Design Awards were the most successful to date, with a total of 135 major stories on television, radio, print and online, including three features on Newshub. Dock Street Group managed to generate more than 24 million media impressions, proving the most successful year to date for the calibre of coverage and overall reach.
